NOTE: Until YouTube came along in February 2005, offering multiple renditions of every piece of music ever written (except Eduard's Tubin's Symphony No. 6), HP filkers often had to scramble in their attempts to find links to less-than-universally familiar tunes. They would often link to MIDI which presented synthesized and rather threadbear renditions of the melody, but 'twas all we had in the online days of yore.

Filkers Were There

A filk by Haggridd to the tune of Buddy Beware from the 1987 Lincoln Center revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes.

Here is a little thing inspired by our fun at Nimbus 2003. This filk is dedicated to all who gathered at the Filkers' Safe House over the course of the convention, but most especially to Gail B.

FILK MAVEN:
Come on, fellas, writing filks is for the birds
Who needs it?

HP FANS:
We do!

FILK MAVEN:
Yeah?

Filkers were there,
At the Nimbus Affair,
We had the best of times
Placing difficult rhymes
In an HP air.

At Nimbus 2003
A "Filkers' Safe House" marquee
Said that within there were friends
Cozy environs
Fine for Filk Mavens.

At the Head of the pack,
Fiery Gail hit the deck
All activities planned;
We were hers to command
In the Filkers' lair.

In this venue were bestowed
To each who wrote the best ode.
Token of our high esteem
For each "Filk Supreme"
Was a Pickled Toad.

Though it may seem bizarre,
We took over the sushi bar.
All the karakoke
Were in praise of HP.
Yes, Filkers were there!

Hopeless at Filks With No Midi

To the tune of Oh What a Beautiful Morning from Oklahoma

There's a new filk a-posted on Hogs Head
There's a new filk a-posted on Hogs Head
The meter is wonky, the words don't all rhyme
But then maybe it's brilliant, the problem's that I'm -

Chorus:
Hopeless at filks with no midi.
Popular songs you all know
I can't tell U2 from Springsteen
Said Quirrell, "I thought you should know."

Oh, the Hog's Head Jukebox is a-ringing
And the patrons are joyfully singing
But I sit here silent, a tear in my eye
All because of the midi they didn't supply

Chorus:
Hopeless at filks with no midi
Posting songs I never knew
Give me a link and I'll go there
And then I'll sing them with you.

All the sounds of the earth are like music,
All the sounds of the earth are like music,
But Google's your friend when you look for a song
Just post when you find it and I'll sing along

Chorus:
Hopeless at filks with no midi
And that's why I'm making this plea
Tears are diluting my Turban
So please have some pity on me.

Midi-Life Crisis

A poem by Ginger

CV, I'll just do this as a straight poem, no tune, so you can recite along.

I've always loved tunes, any silly old ditty,
But haven't a clue how to link to a midi.
I'm hopeless, I guess, at new-fangled technology,
So please, CV dear, please accept my apology.

Half of the time, it is work where I'm at,
And half of the filks are just off my own bat.
If I'm real lucky, a tape or a disk
Can be played to eliminate faux pas or risk.

Sheet music comes in, if the song is well dated,
And sometimes I look up a filk that's related.
I have, under favourites, a site with the prose,
But links to the song? No, they do not disclose.

Though I may come across as half-witted or twitty,
The truth is, I never have clicked on a midi.
I sing with the songs where I say "hey! I know'em!"
But all of the rest, I just read as a poem.

So henceforth, I promise to try and set right
(Just for you- since I read all your filks with delight)
And hope that I find in this great cybersphere,
A big neon sign saying "Midis found here!"

So if you'll be patient, and not expect haste
(Remember I just learned to "copy" and "paste")
I promise to try, with the best of intentions,
To learn of this century's novel inventions.
